What ANC actually does
Active Noise Cancellation works by using an external microphone to capture ambient sound, then producing an inverted sound wave to cancel it. It works brilliantly on low, continuous sounds — airplane engines, AC hums, train rumbles. It does almost nothing for sharp, irregular sounds — voices, traffic horns, dog barks.
So when a ₹3,000 headphone advertises '50dB ANC', that 50dB is only on a narrow low-frequency band. In real-world mixed noise, you'll feel maybe 12–15dB of reduction. Still useful — but not magic.
The three specs that actually matter
First: ANC depth in dB at 100Hz specifically — that's the airplane-cabin band. Second: battery life with ANC ON (not the marketing number with ANC off). Third: comfort at 4+ hours, because ANC headphones tend to clamp tighter than regular ones to seal out noise.
Everything else — LDAC, multipoint, hi-res audio — is secondary if the headphone doesn't actually cancel noise well or fit your head.
ANC vs passive isolation
A well-sealed in-ear TWS can give you 25dB of passive isolation, which is comparable to mid-tier ANC. If your main use case is the metro, a ₹1,500 TWS with foam tips can out-perform a ₹5,000 over-ear ANC. Don't assume over-ear ANC is always better — it depends on the seal.
The bottom line
Buy ANC for airplanes, AC hums, and steady ambient noise. Buy isolation for sharp, varied noise. Buy both for an actual quiet zone — and at that point you're spending ₹15,000+.
